Four Parishes Arts Society - August 2004

The July meeting took the form of a flower arranging demonstration by Val Morris who trained with Constance Spry. She showed us three arrangements - all different but each one special in its own way. We learnt much from her use of flower material, grouping of flowers and clever effects with greenery and I think we all felt motivated into going home to have a go ourselves! The finished results were taken home by the lucky raffle winners.

The AGM is at 7.30 p.m on 14 September at Monxton. This will be followed by a talk with slides by Margaret Ross on the architectural style called Strawberry Hill Gothic. She will briefly introduce Horace Walpole then talk about his house at Twickenham and also about some C18 'sons of Strawberry' that followed it - not to be confused with the later C19 academic Gothic Revival, of which the Houses of Parliament formed part. Strawberry Hill is sadly somewhat in decline and was featured in the Griff Rees-Jones television programme 'Restoration', in which it was competing with others for funds for conservation.
