Four Parishes Arts Society - April 2005Frank Green's talk on The Archaeology of Mottisfont Abbey traced the history of the property from its origin as an Augustinian Priory prior to 1530 to the present day. In 1530, this mediaeval monastic building with its nave and transepts was converted into a very large country residence owned by Lord Sands who also owned The Vine. In 1730, all but one sixth of it was demolished, as it was too expensive to run. Since the National Trust took it over, much work has been done to preserve it and open it up to the public. Frank Green as Heritage Officer TVBC was very closely involved in this work Sadly most visitors go for the famous Whistler Room without realising the historical significance of the building. We
were indeed fortunate to have such a knowledgeable speaker with his excellent
slides to give us an insight into the "above ground" archaeology of
the abbey. I am sure we shall be going back for another visit! On 12 April at Monxton, John Randall from Andover Photographic Society will give us a talk on "Improving Your Photography". This will be an opportunity for both the conventional photographers and budding digital "shooters" to learn how it should be done. Our
proposed visit to the Globe has unfortunately proved not to be viable. But in
its place we have managed to book a Backstage Tour of the Royal Opera House on
13 June. The cost to include coach fare will be £20pp. We do need numbers
and payment as soon as possible as we have to pay the Opera House. Please
contact Renate West on 889507. Visitors are welcome.
