Four Parishes Arts Society - July 2006

The Four Parishes Arts Society met on Tuesday, 13 June at Monxton and Amport Village Hall to hear a talk by Dalila Castelijn on Renaissance painting and its beginnings in Italy and Northern Europe (i.e. Holland, Belgium and Germany). Renaissance painting started with the desire to produce three-dimensional images, hence the introduction of perspective into painting.

Prior to the 15th Century, pictures were very flat and figures often out of proportion. Da Vinci and Raphael in Italy and Hugo van de Goes and Albrecht Durer in Northern Europe developed two different methods of realistic art using both light and shade and depth. The use of oil colour helped greatly in portraying hair and skin tones.

We are most grateful to Dalila for a most instructive and enjoyable evening.

Next month, on 7 July at 7.00 p.m., we are planning to have a picnic at the Hawk Conservancy as guests of Ashley Smith. Bring your own supper. Wine, beer and soft drinks will be available. A guided tour of the premises will follow supper.
