FOUR PARISHES ARTS SOCIETY - March 2009

Talk by Andrew McIndoe, from Hillier’s Garden Centre, Tuesday 10th February 2009

Andrew has been with Hillier’s Gardens for 30 years and in that time has been involved with the planning and design of their entries for the Chelsea Flower Show.

Andrew’s talk covered the planning and designing of our gardens, giving very helpful suggestions  that all round colour was a must, and ‘blocking’ the same colours together to give more impact.  He did not name any specific trees, shrubs or flowers.  He did say, however, when designing our flowerbeds and borders we should always have some evergreen in them, and then in fill with flowers to give colour.  This way there will always be some interest during the winter when the ground is bare.  He compared designing a garden to designing the interior of your houses, i.e throwing out the old and renewing with fresh ideas.

He backed up his very interesting and informative talk with many books on gardening and garden designs.  These were very popular with the members who had shown great interest throughout the evening and had plenty of questions for Andrew to answer.
